Jamaican gospel singer-songwriter Kevin Downswell has released his fifth studio album, Joy Is Here, describing the 10-track project as his most personal and vulnerable work to date. Formed through personal experiences, spiritual growth, and renewed convictions, the project was previewed during an intimate listening session at Tuff Gong Studios in Kingston on Thursday, October 22, prior to its official release on October 30.

Explaining the timing and spiritual drive behind the release, Downswell stated that he felt an overwhelming urgency to share the music without delay. "If I never dropped the album this year I would have missed something. I don’t know if it was somebody who needed these kinds of songs — maybe it’s one; maybe it’s a thousand, or a million. You know when you just have that urgency? It feels like the most perfect thing I’ve ever done," he reflected following the gathering.

The album features extensive collaborations with renowned Jamaican and international artistes from varied musical backgrounds. Among the featured tracks are Who Could It Be But God featuring Papa San, You Remembered Me with Minister Marion Hall, The Reason featuring Gramps Morgan, and Bless Me featuring producer PantaSon. The album also highlights international collaborations with Kenyan gospel singer Moji Babaa and Guyanese artiste Samuel Medas.

Downswell expressed gratitude for the opportunity to partner with artistes from different musical traditions, viewing it as a vehicle to declare his Christian faith to a wider audience. "The kind of love and respect that I get from these artistes, I can’t find words. Gramps Morgan being on this album is one of the humblest things ever. Plus, Gramps is on the album talking about Jesus Christ; it’s the most amazing thing you could ever see," he noted. "It’s humbling to be able to pull men who are used to a particular genre and have them declare Jesus Christ on your platform."

Addressing past criticism regarding cross-genre work, including his earlier collaboration with dancehall artiste Bounty Killer on the single Call Him, Downswell noted that initial skepticism eventually gave way to understanding. "I got some lashing for it, and then a few months later the same people came back and said, ‘Now I see what you were doing.’ They recognised that Bounty didn’t pull me over, I was the one who pulled him over, because they saw changes," he recalled. He affirmed that maintaining his core faith remains paramount regardless of musical settings, stating: "Anytime I am with an artiste, no matter where they are, it’s no compromise. It’s Jesus Christ every time."

The album launch event was structured using an interactive listening concept devised by music industry strategist and media communications executive Judith Bodley. Attendees were divided into small groups to listen to selected tracks and share their personal interpretations before Downswell provided deeper context regarding the inspiration behind the songs. The evening was hosted by Sara-Ann Miller, with musical entertainment provided by DJ Rebirth. Notable attendees included recording artiste Romain Virgo, track and field athlete Natoya Goule, and Downswell’s mentor, Dr Henley Morgan, alongside guests from Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, and across the Caribbean.

In addition to its featured collaborations, Joy Is Here explores themes of perseverance, divine reassurance, and gratitude through songs such as Higher (From the Fire), He’s Not Done With You Yet, and It’s Okay, I Got You. Downswell also credited the team of musicians contributing to the album's production, including musical director and bassist Rhon Matthison, drummer Wendell Lawrence, keyboardists Chris Wright and Wade Johnson, and lead guitarist Brandon Benjamin.

Ultimately, Downswell emphasized that his main goal for the album is for the music to offer tangible comfort and spiritual encouragement to everyday listeners facing life's struggles. "My greatest desire is to see a girl with her earphones in heading to school singing, It’s Okay, I Got You; or a man driving and singing, ‘Your love lifts me higher’ — that is my greatest desire," he said. "Let everything else come after. Let these songs get our eyes off ourselves and our battles and put them on the one who matters most."
