Bahamas Suicide Deaths Surge 60% in 2025, Men and Boys Hit Hardest

Top things to know

  • Suicide deaths in the Bahamas rose 60 % from 10 in 2024 to 16 in 2025.
  • Men accounted for 75 % of the 2025 deaths, and boys showed high rates of suicidal thoughts and attempts.
  • Minister Owen Wells called for community‑based prevention and highlighted the need for safe spaces and mental‑health reforms.

Bahamas officials reported a 60 % jump in suicide deaths in 2025, rising from 10 in 2024 to 16 in 2025, according to the Ministry of Health and Wellness. The same ministry also logged 62 suicide attempts in 2025, up from 48 the previous year. The increase is largely driven by men, with 12 of the 16 deaths—75 %—being male, as stated by Minister of State for Health and Wellness Owen Wells.

Minister Wells highlighted the spike during a World Suicide Prevention Day symposium and an Orange Alert Day at Hillview Seventh‑day Adventist Church, stressing that each death represents a family member, friend or colleague lost. He called for urgent preventive measures and a community‑based approach.

The 2025 Global School‑based Student Health Survey revealed alarming figures among boys: 15.6 % had seriously considered suicide, 16.2 % had made a plan, and 14.7 % had attempted suicide—roughly one in seven surveyed boys. Wells said these numbers demand immediate action in schools, sports clubs, churches and youth groups.

The Ministry released the statistics publicly and the Nassau Guardian ran an online poll asking readers what should be the top priority for suicide prevention, reflecting growing public concern. The poll and the data underscore the need for mental‑health reforms, including the Mental Health Act and stronger community care.

Officials urge that creating safe spaces where young men can speak openly is essential to stamp out stigma and reduce suicides. The government is working to transform mental health services, but the 60 % rise in deaths signals a crisis that requires swift, coordinated action.
