A new frontier in dancehall music video production has been opened with the release of Nigy Boy's latest single, 'Stinkin' Rich.' The project's striking visuals, which include depictions of the artist as a child, were generated entirely using artificial intelligence, marking a significant technological experiment within the Jamaican music industry. The AI-generated video was not the original plan. According to Julian Jones-Griffith, CEO of Pop Style Music, the label behind the song, a traditional live-action music video had already been filmed. The innovative concept emerged during the editing phase when an editor presented the AI-generated alternative. Jones-Griffith noted the AI version achieved complex scenes that would have been prohibitively expensive and logistically challenging to film in reality.'When I saw what he did I realised he achieved things that would’ve been extremely hard and expensive to do in real life,' Jones-Griffith explained. He highlighted the scenes featuring a younger version of Nigy Boy as a prime example of the technology's capability. The process used childhood photos of the artist to create these authentic-looking sequences. The adoption of AI in creative fields is a topic of global debate, but the initial reception to Nigy Boy's video has been positive. Jones-Griffith reported that the artist and his team were enthusiastic about the concept, and the public response has focused on the high quality of the output. The project required fewer resources than a standard video shoot and was completed on a notably faster timeline, demonstrating a potential new model for content creation. This innovation arrives as dancehall continues to assert its global influence. In a separate but significant development, the genre is set for a historic moment with the announced reunion of iconic rivals Vybz Kartel and Mavado on stage at 'A Taste of Reggae Sumfest' in Ocho Rios. Furthermore, the international impact of dancehall was recently underscored when the City of Boston officially declared March 13 as 'Aidonia Day' in honor of the star's contributions to Caribbean culture. While AI tools offer new avenues for storytelling and cost-effective production, their integration into the deeply human and cultural expression of dancehall marks the beginning of a complex conversation. Nigy Boy's 'Stinkin' Rich' video stands as one of the first major local forays into this space, setting a precedent for how technology might shape the visual language of the genre moving forward.
