Just ahead of Brooklyn's annual West Indian American Day Carnival, the Brooklyn Public Library's Central Library is launching a major retrospective exhibition dedicated to soca legend Machel Montano. Organized in partnership with the Machel Montano Foundation for Greatness, "Journey of a Soca King: The Exhibition" opens on Saturday, August 22, 2026, and runs through September 12, honoring more than four decades of the Trinidadian music icon's career.

The exhibition offers fans an immersive look into Montano's path to stardom, featuring memorable costumes, trophies, and vinyl records spanning his career. The curated items trace his rise from his early debut in 1982 at just seven years old through to his record-setting 12 Trinidad and Tobago Road March titles. Highlights also recount his deep historical ties to New York, including an early performance at Brooklyn's FANN Club in 1987.

The tribute lands right during the lead-up to the West Indian American Day Carnival on September 7, which draws between one and three million visitors to Crown Heights every year. As part of the festivities, the library will project the 2026 documentary "Like Ah Boss: Journey of a Soca King" directly onto its building facade on the evening of September 3.
